KMC announces schedule for waste collection

16 July, KATHMANDU : The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has announced the schedule for the collection of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, which will come into effect from the 17th of July.

KMC issued a notification yesterday and has fixed Sunday and Wednesday for the collection of perishable waste and Monday and Friday for non-perishable waste. Citizens should facilitate waste management as prescribed. KMC had issued a notice a month ago and informed the city dwellers about the classification of garbage.

It is said that the repeated notices will be organized and brought to the vehicles carrying unclassified garbage and returned to their homes, and a fine of Rs. 500 per person will be imposed. According to Sarita Rai, Head of the KMC Environment Department, it is easy to manage the waste separated in this way and the vehicles that collect the separated waste also come on different days, so the citizens should manage it accordingly.

The ones who ignore KMC’s request will be punished as an offense according to Section 51(th) of the Natural Resources Protection Act, 2077, and Section 38(th) of the Garbage Management Act, 2011.

Lately, the waste management work of 18 local levels in Kathmandu valley including KMC has become complicated and Sisdol Bharinaka in Nuwakot. KMC is going to start this kind of practice for ease of waste management.
