PM Dahal asserts to strengthen NHRC

16 February, Kathmandu: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) would be made institutionally and structurally stronger.

The PM said this during a meeting with the NHRC office-bearers at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar on Wednesday. He said his efforts would be directed at making the Commission strong.

“Nepal’s national and international image is measured based on the NHRC’s status. How powerful is the Commission and what is its status and whether it is strong in terms of resources determines the situation of human rights in Nepal,” he said.

PM Dahal reiterated that making the Commission powerful and resourceful has a big role and significance.

Stating that he was serious about making democracy and the democratic system stronger, Premier Dahal stressed the need of protecting and promoting democracy, the rule of law, and human rights by rendering the NHRC’s all seven provincial structures stronger.

“This government is serious about the protection of human rights, ‘ he asserted.

During the meeting, the NHRC office-bearers stressed the need of restructuring the NHRC in line with the federal structure. They also said the government’s cooperation was expected for enhancing the resources and the budget for the Commission.

The NHRC officials urged the Prime Minister to keep the priority for the formulation of the required Acts and Regulations of the NHRC.

In the meeting, the PM expressed his commitment to fulfilling the NHRC’s all demands and calling attention in a planned manner.
