Remaining post-quake reconstruction activities handed over to ministries

Kathmandu, Sept 15 (RSS): The handover of remaining post-quake reconstruction activities to the concerned ministries has begun. The handover began as per decision of National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) Steering Committee held on August 25.The Ministry of Urban Development, and Urban Development and Building Construction has been assigned the responsibility to look after the reconstruction works of private houses and settlement along with financial and technical management. The Ministry also got the responsibility to reconstruct the government and community buildings and buildings of health institutions, heritages and monasteries.

The responsibility of reconstructing educational institutes goes to Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, while the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, and Department of Archaeology are to conduct the reconstruction of archaeological heritages including monasteries over 100 years old. The Department of Infrastructures under the Ministry of Federation Affairs and General Administration would re/construct roads, bridges and some monasteries with the coordination of monastery management committee.

At the handover programme, NRA CEO Sushil Gyawali said concerned ministries and their departments would now accomplish the remaining works of reconstruction carried out following the Gorkha Earthquake. Entire responsibilities have been handed to the concerned ministries. Even the legal and policy level mechanism would be provided to the ministries, he added.

The NRA said it would accomplish the reconstruction of Dharahara and Singh Durbar by December 24. A total of Rs 250 billion has been provided to the earthquake survivors so far via banking system.

The NRA was made aware by Secretary at Federal Affairs, Yeknarayan Aryal, to not to allocate the relevant works of one ministry to another. He committed to accomplishing the reconstruction works under the Ministry.
