Kathmandu Court extends police remand of Sandeep Lamichhan e

The rape-accused cricketer has been denying the charge

19 October, KATHMANDU : The Kathmandu District Court has allowed Nepal Police four more days of remand to pursue investigations on rape allegations against Nepali cricket star Sandeep Lamichhane.

The Court’s permission came after Police Circle Gaushala sought more time to investigate rape allegation against Lamichhane, according to Kathmandu District Police Range SP Dinesh Raj Mainali.

It followed the expiration of a five-day remand permission which expired on Tuesday, when Nepal observed a national holiday to mourn the demise of culture historian Satay Mohan Joshi.

A 17-year-old girl had filed a police complaint on September 6, charging Lamichhane with rape. Then Lamichhane was visiting the West Indies to participate in the Caribbean Premier League. He has been denying the charge.

He returned home exactly a month later, on October 6, when the police arrested Lamichhane upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

The police produced him before the Kathmandu District Court for the first time on October 10 asking for seven-day custody starting from October 6.

The custody was extended by five days for the second time on October 13.

Earlier the police obtained the court warrant on September 7 to arrest the 22-year-old cricketer as per the minor girl’s complaint filed at the Gaushala Police Circle.
